Barito Renewables’ Subsidiary, Star Energy Geothermal, Set to Boost 102.6 MW Capacity with Tender Winners Announcement at the International Geothermal Conference

Jakarta, 18 September 2024 – Star Energy Geothermal, a subsidiary of Barito Renewables, is set to significantly enhance its installed capacity with the announcement of the selected tender winners at the International Geothermal Conference & Exhibition 2024 (IIGCE), where Star Energy Geothermal is the host.

These strategic initiatives aim to boost Star Energy's geothermal capacity through collaborative retrofitting and new development projects, which will not only enhance the capacity of various geothermal units operated by Star Energy but also support Indonesia’s ambitious goal of achieving net-zero emissions.

By retrofitting and expanding our existing plants, we are ensuring a sustainable and efficient future for clean energy in the country. These partnerships not only increase capacity but also drive technological advancements in geothermal energy, positioning us at the forefront of the industry.”

In total, the various initiatives announced at the conference are projected to increase Star Energy Geothermal’s installed capacity by 102.6 MW, reinforcing its position as one of the world’s leading geothermal energy companies. The total investment is slated to reach US$ 346 million.

Key Initiatives Announced Today:

A. New Plant Developments/Expansions

1. Salak Unit 7 Expansion (additional 40 MW)
Partners: JO PT Timas Suplindo and PT Rekayasa Industri. This project will add 40 MW to the Salak geothermal field, leveraging the Salak Injection Realignment Program.
2. Wayang Windu Unit 3 Expansion (additional 30 MW)
Partner: PT Inti Karya Persada Teknik This expansion will add 30 MW to the Wayang Windu geothermal field, optimizing existing surface facilities to increase total capacity.

B. Capacity Increase of Existing Units
1. Wayang Windu Unit 1 & 2 Retrofit (18.4 MW increase)
Partners: Consortium of Fuji Electric Co. Ltd. (lead firm) and PT Wasa Mitra Engineering This retrofit aims to upgrade the technology and efficiency of Wayang Windu Unit 1 & 2, increasing the total generation capacity by 18.4 MW. This will raise each unit’s capacity to 124.45 MW and further ensure the long-term reliability of the power plant.
2. Salak Units 4, 5, and 6 Retrofit (7.2 MW increase)
Partner: PT Fuji Electric Indonesia The Salak Retrofit project will replace turbine rotors and diaphragms with advanced designs, boosting the efficiency and increasing the combined capacity of Units 4, 5, and 6 by 7.2 MW.
3. Darajat Unit 3 Retrofit (7 MW increase)
Partner: PT Mitsubishi Power Indonesia Through technological upgrades, the Darajat Unit 3 Retrofit will enhance energy efficiency and increase capacity by 7 MW, raising the total capacity from 122 MW to 129 MW.

C. Laboratory Services Collaboration
Partner: PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk This partnership will focus on geothermal fluid sampling and analysis to further enhance operational efficiencies and adherence to Good Corporate Governance principles.

The development of the above projects will increase capacity from 230.5 MW to 278.9 MW in Wayang Windu, from 381 MW to 428.2 MW in Salak, and from 274.5 MW to 281.5 MW in Darajat. The development of these projects aligns with the terms and conditions of the JOC contract, permitting Star Energy Geothermal to expand capacity to 400 MW at Wayang Windu, 495 MW at Salak and 330 MW at Darajat.

The initiatives announced at IIGCE 2024 underline Star Energy Geothermal’s dedication to enhancing energy efficiency and its long-term commitment to sustainability. These projects represent a bold step toward a greener future, utilizing cutting-edge technology to optimize geothermal energy production.
